Plastic products can include any number of products and is used in various different applications for different reasons.
Alexander Parkes demonstrated the first man made plastic in 1862 in London. Plastic products are synthetic or semi-synthetic organic solids that are moulded. Today there are various compositions and classifications of plastics and some of these classifications include:
- Thermoplastics and thermosetting polymers
- Biodegradability
- Natural plastic vs. synthetic plastics
- Crystalline vs. Amorphous
The most common uses for plastic include:
- Polyester – for fibres and textiles.
- Polyurethanes - Cushioning foams, surface coatings, printing rollers
- Polycarbonate - Compact discs, eyeglasses, riot shields, security windows, traffic lights, lenses.
- Polycarbonate/Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene - car interior and exterior parts and cell phones
- Polyvinylidene chloride - Food packaging
- High-density polyethylene - Detergent bottles, milk jugs, and moulded plastic cases.
- Polyethylene terephthalate - Carbonated drinks bottles, peanut butter jars, plastic film, microwavable packaging.
- Polyethylene - supermarket bags, plastic bottles and other inexpensive products
- High impact polystyrene -refrigerator liners, food packaging, vending cups.
- Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene - Electronic equipment cases and drainage pipe
- Polypropylene - Bottle caps, drinking straws, yogurt containers, appliances, car fenders
